The University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning is dedicated to conducting quality research on educational problems identified by national, state, and local leaders. The overarching goal behind our research is to develop creative solutions that positively impact all learners in the online instructional setting. Toward that end, we strive to provide educators, employers, and policy makers with the knowledge, skills, and support necessary to bring about significant change in learner outcomes in the online instructional environment. We seek to improve educational outcomes for all students, especially students with disabilities.
This position will work across state contracts to implement a variety of tasks including working directly with state administrators to identify and provide supports for school staffs and students with disabilities and online learning. The position will continue through 8/30/2018 with the possibility of renewal to the extent that state agencies support the research, evaluation, technical assistance, and dissemination activities.
Note: Overnight travel may be required; Anticipated 24 nights/year
20% - Leadership and Administration:
Develop partnerships among states to learn from, work together, develop strategies and implementation plans.
Collaborate with state administrators to identify technical assistance needs in online learning and students with disabilities.
Work with the principal investigators and state administrators to develop proposals and project management processes (e.g., task and deliverable timelines, organization charts) for state contracts.
Monitor progress of project participants e.g. meeting project objectives, deadlines and regulations regarding required project documentation, reports, data collection, and forms.
Assist in development of budgets for state contracts.
Coordinate professional development events, meetings, interviews, webinars
Communicate with state administrators and coordinate with national experts to organize presentations and knowledge sharing.
Establish relationships with online learning providers in partner states.
50% - Research and Product Development:
Draft technical, scholarly research publications, including literature reviews, methodology descriptions, results and discussion of findings in appropriate terminology for targeted audiences.
Research, gather and synthesize complex information from multiple sources to support research inquiries of state administrators and other stakeholder groups.
Develop professional development materials, technical reports, and other informational materials for dissemination.
Develop graphic representations of data, concepts, or other research and evaluation information for written materials, poster presentations, web presentations and other visual representations of data; collaborate with graphic designers as needed to produce professional graphics.
Prepare evaluations of the current status of online learning and students with disabilities and provide recommendations.
25% - Technical Assistance:
Provide professional development about IDEA (e.g., provisions for child find, FAPE, LRE, zero reject, and parent participation) and related federal and state policies to various stakeholder groups through webinars, presentations, and asynchronous online modules.
Conduct onsite visits to target states to meet with SEA staff and stakeholders to identify current state policy and practices in online learning and students with disabilities.
Assess accessibility features available to students with disabilities in virtual schools in target states.
Identify professional development needs of online teachers and staff who work with students with disabilities.
Facilitate state strategic plan development in online learning and students with disabilities.
Collaborate with online learning providers to embed parent and student support and accessibility features learning modules.
Assist states in the development of guidelines for best practices in digital learning environment in the following areas; teaching diverse learners, IEP development, school choice, parent roles and responsibilities, professional development.
5% - Miscellaneous:
Prepare and supervise student support staff as needed.
Attend academic conferences as appropriate.
Post relevant information to website or social media.
Master’s degree in education, psychology, or related field regarding instruction, learning, or management
Two or more years of quantitative and qualitative research methods applied in the K-12 online learning environment
Three or more years of administrative grant experience
Three or more years of experience researching state policies regarding online instruction of students with disabilities
Two or more years of experience in professional presentations
Professional publication on online learning and students with disabilities evidenced in application materials
Experience using MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Creative Suite products
Master’s degree in education, psychology, public administration, or related field regarding instruction, learning, or management
Five or more years of experience in working with students with disabilities or their families
Possess working knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Strong communication and management skills
Experience working in a collaborative team environment
