Position Overview
Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles to perform steam distribution work in construction, maintenance, and repair activities. The incumbent will assist in the inspection, repair, and replacement of steam distribution assets throughout campus.

Job Description
60% - Steam Fitting: Assists in the weekly inspection of steam distribution tunnels for worn insulation, leaks, plugged floor drains, malfunctions of regulators and other steam delivery concerns. Assists in the repair and/or replacement of steam traps, regulators, valves, and other mechanical equipment. Assists in the replacement of damaged or worn pipe insulation. Assists in the replacement or repair of steam lines. Assists in the fabrication of metal materials used in the repair or replacement process on steam lines.
25% - Pump Mechanic: Lubricates and otherwise performs scheduled preventive maintenance on condensate pumps in various campus locations. Removes pumps in need of repair. Tests and trouble shoot pumps for needed repair. Repairs include repairing float mechanisms, float switches, thermostatic and electrical response items, replacement of gaskets and flanges, replacement or repair of pump couplings, alignment of pump with motor and connecting and/or disconnecting of electrical supply, and overhaul of pumps including total replacement of operating parts. Installs new and rebuilt pumps.
10% - Miscellaneous: Assists the shop supervisor in the selection of replacement pumps. Communicates work status with supervisor and customers. Delivers materials and supplies to work sites. Performs related work as assigned by supervisor.
5% - Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Reach, grasp, lift, carry, and place moderately heavy loads frequently, and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs.) with or without accommodation.
2. Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures – both hot and cold, inside, and outdoors. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
3. Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
4. Work planned and unplanned overtime as needed.
5. Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.
6. Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
- One (1) year of experience as a steamfitter, pipefitter or in a related field. Associates degree or vocational school certification may be substituted for the required experience.
- Must have a valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and materials of the steamfitter trades.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications, as well as skill in use of tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
- Experience working in a college, university, or large commercial setting.
