Our clients are indigent defendants charged with federal crimes ranging from drug crimes to white-collar crimes to terrorism. We practice holistic defense lawyering to protect our clients’ rights and champion their humanity at every stage of the criminal case and beyond.

Join Our Team
We need an attorney to fill a full-time temporary appointment (one year and one day, with the possibility of an extension) as a Research & Writing Specialist in our Topeka, Kansas office. Starting salary is JSP 11/1 at$61,605 to JSP 15/1 at $122,048, depending on experience, and includes generous federal benefits.
The Job
The Research & Writing Specialist will be assigned a wide range of challenging and satisfying work, from researching, analyzing,and writing trial motions and memoranda ,jury instructions, appellate briefs,and legal and policy memoranda, to creating and presenting educational programs for the FPD and CJA panel. Some travel will be required.
You Must
Be a US citizen or eligible to work in the United States; Be a graduate of an accredited law school;
Be licensed to practice in the federal courts;
Be in good standing in all states and courts where you are admitted to practice; Have some criminal-defense or civil-rights experience;
Pass an FBI background check; and
Not engage in the private practice of law while working for the FPD.
It Would Be Great If You
Have a proven commitment to our mission;
Have experience in habeas or other post-conviction litigation; and/or Have experience working in or with the federal courts.
