Position Overview
The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication seeks a dedicated professional to join us in creating opportunities for students, staff, and faculty in the exciting world of media production. The media production specialist works with video, broadcast, and emerging technologies to ensure connectivity and creativity. The specialist also supervises student employees and serves as a technical liaison within the School and University. The position assists, backs up and reports to the School’s Director of Broadcast Operations/Chief Broadcast Engineer. Applicants should have knowledge of computer software editing programs and familiarity with media production devices such as cameras, microphones, and lighting. They are expected to help produce media in a variety of formats and ensure the smooth flow of production, distribution, and storage of files. The successful applicant will have a willingness to adapt to change, meet deadlines, and have a positive attitude around an ever-changing environment.
Job Description
65% Media Production work
- Ensure that audio-visual needs are met regarding video recording, editing, and final delivery while working with and coordinating production requests.
- Work with others to teach and create content for podcasts and emerging technology
- Assist students in creating and uploading videos and managing YouTube and other social media
- Oversee quality control of media equipment, ensuring proper studio set-up, lighting, audio configuration, and equipment maintenance.
- Supervise tv studio projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
35% Technical support
- Update school equipment as needed. Serve as Technical Liaison backup for the Director of Broadcast Operations/Chief Broadcast Engineer.
- Maintain classroom and laptop cart computers – including updates, management, Wi-Fi, software updates, central file storage, etc.
- Supervise student workers
- Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to troubleshoot ongoing problems and foster a highly productive and efficient learning environment.
- Ensure content flow on school displays, including screens and ticker
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or 10 years professional experience in video production, journalism, or related field.
- Three years of video production experience.
- At least one year of supervising others in production or related field
- At least one year experience working with Macintosh and Windows operating systems.
- At least one year experience working with Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office or equivalent software.
- Demonstrated ability to work in team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work in flexible environment, working proactively and providing support to users/clients or students.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of experience assisting, training at a University setting or in a similar role at a secondary school, community college or professional production studio.
- Master’s degree
