Position Overview
The mission of the Madison A. and Lila Self Engineering Leadership Fellows Program (the "SELF Program") is to develop passionate engineering and computer science graduates who are strongly goal-oriented and who bring the business skills and vision needed to guide the technology-based corporations of tomorrow. The SELF Program will recruit, select and financially support students at the University of Kansas (the "University") and administer to them an ongoing four-year personal development program that leads to a continuing supply of exceptional graduates at the bachelor of science level. Recruitment and program events are likely to occur in the evenings and on weekends. By active participation in the program, the students will expand and refine their leadership, managerial, business, interpersonal, entrepreneurial, communication and engineering skills through mentoring, coursework, seminars, and leadership opportunities. Graduates from the SELF Program will possess the personal attributes needed to become effective leaders who are motivated to make a real difference during their careers.
Job Description
60% - Self Program
Responsible for the administration and program development of the SELF Program, including day to day monitoring of operational fiscal costs, program maintenance and evaluation.
Works to develop new future forward concepts/programs that benefit the education pursuits of SELF Fellows by working and developing relationships with collaborators, external partners, etc.
Develops content, orchestrates/directs to fruition workshops, skills sessions, classes, and leadership experiences for fellows/students:
- Workshops typically consist of one- to two-day events to be held prior to the start of the semester and could occur on evenings or on weekends. Topics have included team leadership skills and styles, communication skills, business skills (financial statements, cash flow, return on investment, etc.), etc.
- Skills sessions occur during the course of each semester. Typical topics include: goal setting and decision making, entrepreneurship in small and large enterprises, negotiation skills, project proposal preparation and presentations, working with consultants, and career planning and preparation. Social/community building events would also be included.
- Develop a leadership development plan with each fellow/student. The leadership development plan provides the student with an opportunity to apply some of the material learned in other Program events such as workshops and seminars.
- Develop, maintain and direct the SELF Alumni Program to serve both student and alumni needs, keeping them connected to the program as well as development opportunities, as well as providing mentors for current SELF Fellows.
- Provide oversight for the SELF Capstone Experience for 4th level Fellows. Engage underclassmen to determine their goals for a leadership experience. Assist the Fellows in developing a plan, including a marketing and funding plans (as necessary), presentations, etc. This experience is aimed at developing an entrepreneurial spirit by creating an idea, developing it and selling the idea to parties outside the School of Engineering for funding.
Direct, in conjunction with the Engineering Career Center, internship opportunities with leading companies that match students' interests.
Oversea staff utilization of the alumni mentoring network, including, for instance, the use of PeopleGrove software.
Develop recruiting materials.
Direct selection process from applications through awards.
Work with the Associate Dean of Diversity , Equity, and Inclusion and other campus partners to ensure that diversity is appropriately reflected in the processes and cohorts of the SELF Program.
Coordinate and maintain relationships with School of Engineering and other University faculty. Faculty engagement is paramount to the success of Fellows and the program.
Develop program goals in conjunction with the Dean's Office leadership team.
Train and Supervise at least two full-time staff members (coordinators and/or support staff).
Develop Outreach Opportunities with industry such as the annual case study competition and other opportunities
Work with leaders of student organizations, who are not SELF Fellows, across the School of Engineering to develop their leadership skills.
10% - Other
Assist with School of Engineering events, such as New Student Orientation, High School Design Competition (operated as a SELF Program even), Scholars Day, etc..., which are likely to require working some evenings and weekends.
Assist with supervision of student assistant directly supporting the SELF Program.
Other relevant duties and projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree; or Bachelor's degree plus five years of related experience (recruitment, budget management, admissions, marketing, and/or marketing research).
- A minimum of three years professional engineering or marketing experience or three years of experience in developing and presenting leadership or entrepreneurship programs or three years of career development, business relations, corporate recruiting experience or other relevant area.
- Excellent written communications skills as evidenced by the application materials.
- One year experience with basic computer systems and working experience of software applications and programs including, but not limited to the following: Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint Presentations, and Word.
- Experience developing programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in giving presentations.
- Experience in events coordination.
- Demonstrated ability to work with college students.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Experience as a professional engineer, and/or working in an engineering industry setting.
- Experience supervising staff.
