Program Officer
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust is hiring a Program Officer for the Rural Healthcare Program.
The Sioux Falls, SD office seeks a full time Program Officer with experience in healthcare and/or grants management to work closely with Helmsley staff and a Trustee to develop and manage a growing grants portfolio. Helmsley's prominent position in the rural healthcare space creates the opportunity to lead initiatives that can significantly impact healthcare access, and in turn, improve the lives of residents of the upper Midwest.
The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial, innovative and collaborative approach. She/he will possess strong communication skills and have experience convening multiple stakeholders as well as facilitating collaborative projects with other funders, public charities, government agencies and industry partners. The candidate must also have experience supervising staff and working collaboratively with colleagues.
Responsibilities
The PO will assist the Program Director to develop, implement and manage a multimillion-dollar annual grants program. Some overnight travel will be required. Primary responsibilities include providing intellectual and organizational leadership in:
Grant Making and Monitoring
- Sourcing new projects and facilitating due diligence;
- Evaluating proposals;
- Monitoring a growing program and grants portfolio;
- Managing the program’s grants through each grant life-cycle, including grant application, due diligence, implementation, evaluation, and providing technical support to applicants and grantees; and preparing concise, analytical, and compelling grant recommendations to Trustees;
- Working with grantees to track progress on grants and outcomes;
Development of Strategic Plan and Team Management
- Designing and implementing programs and partnerships with a patient-centered mindset driven equally by scientific rigor and deep compassion
- Contributing to program development by organizing site visits, meetings, and symposia that further the development goals of the program
- Supervising program support staff as needed, and managing the administrative duties related to this responsibility;
Helmsley Collaboration and Personal Leadership
- Collaborating with our Communications team to drive further impact through effectively communicating or working to select audiences and at key moments;
- Sharing the Rural Healthcare Program’s knowledge and expertise to assist other Helmsley programs and departments achieve their goals

Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degrees (master’s degree or higher preferred) required.
- Minimum five years’ relevant experience required.
- Experience in grants administration including foundation management that includes creating protocols and reviewing financial budgets.
- Background in behavioral health, system administration, or experience at a health organization preferred.
- Experience in managing multiple priorities effectively; outstanding time management.
- Proven track-record of working effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to translate concepts succinctly to diverse stakeholders and audiences.
- Ability to think outside the box to achieve desired outcomes.
- Must be organized and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative; and to work under deadlines and changing priorities.
- Able to maintain confidentiality of information.
