Assistant or Associate Professor of Latinx Studies

The Latin American Studies Department at Davidson College seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant or Associate professor in US Latinx Studies, with a specialization in a social science or interdisciplinary field. Areas of desired expertise include, but are not limited to, social movements, public health, human geography, migration studies, popular culture, and/or religion. The potential to develop community-based research courses in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region is especially desirable. The committee prioritizes candidates whose teaching and research indicates experience, and the potential for success, in engaging students from groups historically excluded from access to higher education.

The teaching load is four courses in the first year, and five thereafter. The successful candidate will be able to teach a self-designed “Introduction to Latinx Studies”; the transdisciplinary “Introduction to Latin American Studies” (LAS 101) course we offer annually (with shared syllabi available); a first-year writing course (WRI 101) with an instructor-selected topic (with pedagogical support from the Writing Program), and upper-level courses on related topics in Latinx Studies, usually drawn from areas of research expertise. The Department aims to assign pre-tenure faculty course assignments in ways that support growth in teaching and research. Candidates for this position should expect their PhD by summer 2024 in a social science or related field, possess a strong research agenda with a focus on some dimension of Latinx Studies, and a demonstrated record of or potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching. Additional responsibilities include advising and mentorship of undergraduates, participation in college committees and departmental tasks, and directing independent student research, including thesis projects. We value candidates who want to strengthen an active department with a vision of Latin American Studies that celebrates interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship with a transnational focus.

To apply, please go to and upload your CV and a Cover Letter (3-4 single-spaced pages max) that includes 1) a description of your research agenda and how your scholarship translates into teaching in a liberal arts context committed to engaging with students from groups that have been historically limited in their access to higher education, and 2) a discussion of your understanding of inclusive pedagogy in working with an increasingly diverse student body and campus community.

Applications received by Monday, October 15, are guaranteed full consideration by the search committee; however, the position will remain open to initial applications (CV and Cover Letter) until closed. The committee may also choose to review late applications, depending on the status of the search. Selected applicants will be asked to send additional materials by October 30. These materials may include a statement of teaching philosophy; a research statement or writing sample; a sample syllabus draft for Introduction to Latinx Studies; and the names of three people who could provide a letter of recommendation by November 15.

At Davidson College, we believe the college grows stronger by recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff committed to building an inclusive community. In order to achieve and sustain educational excellence, we seek to hire talented faculty and staff across the intersections of diverse races, ethnicities, religions and worldviews, sexual orientations, gender identities, ages, socio-economic backgrounds, political perspectives, abilities, veteran status, cultures, and national origins.
