Full-time position available with KCMO’s General Services Department, Employee Safety Division, 414 E. 12 th St, Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monitors aspects of the City’s safety program, collaborating with departments for improvements to safety efforts and conducting safety training for employees. Partners with departments to identify hazards and unsafe practices and assists in developing safety procedures. Assists departments in the investigation of accidents and injuries and prevention efforts. Reviews studies and works to develop cost effective solutions to bring facilities and processes into compliance with occupational safety and health standards. Work is performed with independence and is reviewed by demonstrated program effectiveness and periodic reports. Works in conjunction with a team of safety managers and various departments to create pre-injury procedures and training efforts designed to reduce employee injuries, property, liability and auto losses. Creates content and trains new and current employees on a variety of occupational safety and health topics. Supports department safety committee accident reviews to recognize and mitigate risk and creates a culture of care within their departments.
Takes an active role on the City Safety Board to review trends and assists in determining annual safety priorities and participates in Accident Review Committee meetings. Conducts inspections and prepares reports of observed hazards at work sites and facilities and provides recommendations for improvements. Maintains database of vehicular or workplace accidents and safety inspections and works with workers’ compensation to analyze data for the citywide safety program. Evaluates effectiveness of current safety programs and recommends and implements program modifications. Assists in setting standards for accountability and safety policies for employees and supervisors. Reviews the safety handbook and safety standards manual. Partners with city groups including the Office of Environmental Quality and the Office of Emergency Management. Utilizes thorough knowledge of applicable consensus occupational safety and health standards and risks, federal, state and local regulations pertaining to occupational safety and environmental risks, principles and practices of safety by design and accident control, modern methods, practices and techniques of safety inspection, maintaining safety program records and comprehensive reports. Recognizes safety hazards and prescribes corrective action. Plans, organizes, directs a comprehensive safety program. Demonstrates effectively the need and rewards from a municipal safety/accident program. Establishes/maintains cooperative relations with leaders and staff at various levels, departments, the public, subordinates.
May train/supervise assigned safety officers. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree in industrial safety or related field; OR high school graduation and 4 years of experience managing a safety program. May be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen as prescribed by the City. Salary Range: $4,230-$7,534/month.
