Full-time position available with KCMO’s Public Works Department, Director’s Office, 414 E. 12th St.Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.Establishes and maintains personal contacts with appropriate representatives of the local media (e.g., editors, news directors, reporters, etc.). Works with liaisons from other City departments and local civic organizations to promote the mission and responsibilities of Public Works. Keeps informed of current events and activities in the department and identifies and publicizes those that are newsworthy. (This is usually done through news releases, interviews or feature articles). Attempts to deal with and minimize any negative publicity about Public Works and to correct any negative stories which are incorrectly reported. Generates advance publicity through the local media of scheduled activities of interest to the general public. Works with the division managers to identify and publicize Public Works stories/events of local news interest. Responsibilities include representing the city at public meetings and events. Responds to requests for information from the public through email, voicemail, phone calls, sunshine requests, etc. Department liaison for Action Center (3-1-1) cases. Assists departmental staff in promoting and implementing new programs or redesign of existing services. Keeps the director and staff informed on activities and maintains the Public Works web pages.REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree and 3 years of progressively responsible, professional experience in business or public sector administration, with at least 2 years at the level of the City’s Senior Administrative Assistant; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience, with at least 3 years at the level of the City’s Senior Administrative Assistant. Preferences include: journalism or public relations background; experience writing and filming short stories for social media; graphics and/or photography experience; producing larger video and image pieces.Salary Range: $4,065-$6,702/month.
