Several limited-term contract positions available with the Parks & Recreation Department, Park Ranger Division, 4600 E. 63rd St. Normal Work Days/Hours: Thursday-Sunday or Saturday-Tuesday, Day shifts 5:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Evening shifts 3:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. Provides park security under the authority of city ordinances and state law for the KCMO Parks & Recreation Department. Patrols park areas in radio-equipped vehicles, on foot, on bicycle and on all-terrain vehicles (ATV) assisting park visitors and protecting park resources. Checks park visitors for appropriate passes and permits, and issues GOS’s and UTT’s to violators of parks related city ordinances when necessary. Locks and unlocks gates at specified opening and closing times, and reports damage to or theft of park property. Investigates park disturbances. Provides information to the public and visitors about park areas, facilities, rules and regulations, opening and closing times, permit requirements, etc. Prepares reports including incident reports and daily logs, etc. Provides assistance, as required, in emergency situations for the public and other agencies. Renders emergency first-aid as needed. Requests assistance from other law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency medicine agencies, tow companies, etc. Provides traffic control and crowd control services, and assists in searches for lost children, park patrons, etc. Closes hazardous roads and barricades roads during dangerous conditions. Assists with searches for possible drowning victims. Reports to Park Ranger Supervisor all safety, health or environmental hazards. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRES high school graduation. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license in accordance with City of KCMO policies. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen. Must be eligible to obtain a class A private officer’s commission (armed) as issued by the KCMO Police Department. Must meet one or more of the following three requirements: (1) Graduated in good standing and be in possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited civilian police academy whose curriculum consisted of at least 470 hours of law enforcement training to include handgun training at the federal, state or local level; (2) Graduated in good standing and be in possession of a certificate of completion from a military police training/MP advanced individual training or other military MOS that involves law enforcement, criminal investigation or security patrol on military installations that included handgun training; and/or (3) 10 years of continuous experience as an armed private security officer in good standing. Preference given for a background in park police and/or park security patrol, parks and recreation experience, an accredited degree in a parks and recreation related field or a natural science and a strong general knowledge of the natural environment.
