The purpose of this position is to serve as a lead employee of the sanitation crew and to provide safe and efficient operation of assigned heavy equipment used in the collection of solid waste.
This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Examples of Duties:
- Operates a mechanical side loading packer truck to collect solid waste on a designated route, including streets and alleys;
- Operates a rear loading packer truck to collect uncontained refuse in a designated area;
- Operates other assigned equipment as needed;
- Detects, identifies, and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments;
- Leads and assists collection crews;
- Cleans equipment after task completion;
- Provides assistance to the supervisor in regards to heavy equipment operations; and
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience operating various light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment (prior supervisory/crew leader experience preferred).
OR - The ability to read and write sufficiently to complete required tasks and at least five years of experience operating various light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment (prior supervisory/crew leader experience preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- state and local laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways.
- traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operations.
- hazards, safety rules, and precautions involved in the operation of sanitation vehicles and equipment.
- operations of heavy equipment used in solid waste collection.
- the geographic layout of the City.
Skilled in:
- safe operation of trucks and equipment assigned to the position.
- completing minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
- managing one's own time and the time of others efficiently.
Ability to:
- perform strenuous work requiring good physical condition.
- work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.

Special Requirements:
Valid N.C. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and acceptable driving record at time of hire.
