Research Assistant

 

Job Summary

This position is located at the Ornamental Horticulture Research Center in Mobile, Alabama.

 

The individual selected for this position will provide professional research assistance with ongoing projects at the Ornamental Horticulture Research Center. Research at the OHRC focuses on helping producers identify and address pest, disease and other production problems.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Conduct routine measurements and analysis for research projects and document results; operate and maintain general and specialized farm equipment; plant, fertilize, prune, and maintain various woody ornamentals and flowering annuals; assists with logistical considerations to include equipment, materials, and labor needs; collects data/samples related to others’ research; documents results and observations in writing as well as possibly presenting results to others; and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Education and Experience

Education Level: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

Field of Study: Horticulture, Agronomy and Soils, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Forestry, or related field.

Years of Experience: No experience required for entry level I

 

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal, written communication, and problem solving skills; demonstrated technical excellence and ability to work independently and in a team environment are essential.

Minimum Technology Skills Must possess proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Minimum License and Certifications Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include the following:

 

Knowledge and experience with ornamental horticulture research and various data collection methods.

Experience setting up/laying out scientific experiments preferably related to horticulture.

*Experience with maintenance and operation of equipment.
