Reckon, a start-up media brand serving the everyday builders, trailblazers and changemakers in the South and beyond, is seeking an audience editor with proven experience in growing digital brands and the ability to mobilize and drive action within teams.
This is a senior leadership role, reporting to Alabama Media Group’s director of audience and working closely with Reckon’s editor to craft and drive strategies, product and platform-specific ways to expand the Reckon audience. The audience editor will also oversee a team of audience producers.
The ideal candidate is passionate about and personally connected to Reckon’s mission to elevate the voices of people and communities in the South, and those most often ignored or overlooked. This individual is strategic, self-directed, resourceful, driven, experimental, creative, and comfortable building processes, teams and structures from scratch.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Strategy: Define, prioritize and drive action on regional and national audience growth strategies for Reckon, including Black Joy and Honey newsletters.
- Product management: Own and continually improve the user experience in all the places where Reckon interacts with its audiences, including newsletters, relevant social channels, website, etc.
- Educating Reckon staff: Drive continual learning about audience-centered practices on Reckon staff by sharing performance metrics, insights and best practices from Reckon’s work and industry examples.
- People management: Lead a team of audience producers and collaborate with other editors to coach staff on best practices.
- Partnerships: Leverage (and manage) internal and external strategic partnerships to grow Reckon’s audience
- Industry: Staying up-to-date on industry development and competitors
Key qualifications for this role include:
- Knowledge of metrics and ability to translate data and metrics into actionable insights for the Reckon team
- Experience growing digital audiences, particularly through newsletters and social media
- Ability to lead and drive action in all major audience growth functions including digital marketing experience, brand building, audience growth and engagement, analytics and
product management
- Experience with digital technology, platforms and analytics tools (WordPress, Google Analytics, Conviva, CrowdTangle, SocialFlow, etc.)
- Hands-on knowledge of paid digital campaigns, managing budgets, overseeing vendors, platforms
We’re open to remote work for candidates with deep knowledge and experience in the South, with occasional travel to work with our Birmingham, Alabama-based audience teams.
